Brewery Review: Listermann Brewing Company

Listerman Brewing Company - Cincinnati, OH

First, a little back story, several months ago I was sitting in Craft Beer Cellar in Saint Louis, MO, and was offered a sample of a beer called Shamrock Shake from another customer who brought several of his hometown beers to share with us. I figured why not, and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked this darker bourbon barrel-aged Irish cream stout. It was smooth, creamy, and just downright delicious. I immediately decided to start following Listermann on both Facebook and Twitter. Over the last few months, I was fascinated by seeing some of their unique creations like their Cinnamon Roll Chickow, Red Hot Chickow, Blood Orange IPA, and even a Lemon Pound Cake beer. I knew that at some point, I had to make the trip to sample more.

Fast forward to last week, and after nearly a long grueling four-month wait, I was finally able to visit Cincinnati as part of a beer tasting vacation. Once we arrived, the first thing we did after checking into the hotel was to call an Uber and head over to Listermann. We arrived shortly after 4:30 pm on Friday and were immediately greeted by two of the most friendly and engaging bartenders, Mike and Pat. We spent much of our time on Friday conversing with Pat, who gave us a detailed insight into each beer and some history of the brewery. That evening we were able to sample most of their beers, but the real highlight was when they tapped one of their limited release beers, the Strawberry Kiwi Gose. It was light, with a subtle hint; however, it was near the end of the keg, so Pat said that the flavors might not have been as intense. We returned on Saturday afternoon as we wanted to enjoy more before heading home on Sunday, and spent most of our visit chatting with other friendly customers and the Mike, and Taproom Manager, Karenna. Both were a pleasure to chat with and very friendly. Kareena even made one of her favorite mixers, called "Don't talk sh!t about Cider", which was a combination of their Don't talk sh!t about Norwood, American Pale Ale) mixed with their Cider, it was great!

The beers here are amazing, and I can tell you after talking with some of the staff and customers that they use only the highest quality of ingredients. It also helps that they have won Ohio Brewery of the Year at the 2nd Annual New York International Beer Competition. Also, their Nutcase beer won the 2014 Bronze Medal at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. My favorite beers had to have been the Nutcase (Peanut Butter Porter) and Chickow / Chickow Nitro (Hazelnut Brown Ale), both were darker beers and full of flavor, so much so that just a smell of the Nutcase made you think you were opening up a fresh jar of peanut butter.

Inside is small with several tables and about ten seats at the bar, however upstairs, you will find a larger open area with picnic tables, a Nintendo 64, and even a shuffleboard table, perfect for those lazy weekend afternoons or a fun happy hour. Outside there is an open patio along the street with several picnic tables for those wanting to take in the fresh air. Also, in the coming months, food service will be arriving at Listermann. In addition to serving great beer, you can grab some of their items to go as they have some cold beer available for sale and some limited bottles, or if you like, you can fill up your Growler and take it home.

As I stated earlier, service here was exceptional; the staff knows their beer, and they are super friendly. If you are visiting Cincinnati or you are a beer lover, you have to put Listermann on your checklist of places to visit; you will become a fan. Listermann is already at the top of my favorite breweries, and I am already planning my next trip to Cincinnati around the release of Shamrock Shake 2017!

2019: Beer in Review

2019 was quite a year, I visited my first brewery outside of the United States during a trip to Mexico, visited the Great American Beer Festival, and visited my milestone 200th brewery. Over the year, I was able to visit 55 new breweries and sampled over 848 unique beers from 287 different breweries. The Great American Beer Festival in Denver, along with several beer festivals in my hometown of St.Louis helped me sample so many different styles of beers. Despite the massive variety, my most common beer style of the year was likely a toss-up between the many IPA varieties and Saisons, however towards the end of the year, I started to venture more into stouts, which is something I usually have stayed away from. St. Louis, MO (Metro Area) St. Louis is my hometown, so I would make an effort to visit every brewery within the region. I think as of this year I have visited most, but there is always something new opening. St.Louis is easily one of the best beer scenes in the country. ...

Brewery Review: Hoof Hearted Brewery & Kitchen (Columbus, OH)

Hoof Hearted Brewery & Kitchen Columbus, OH My second brewery stop in Columbus was an obvious one, how could I resist visiting Hoof Hearted which had recently made their beers available in St.Louis. It was a no brainer to check out their taproom to enjoy some fresh, uniquely brewed beers. After a short Lyft ride from Land-Grant, we arrived at Hoof Hearted, again due to the time (Early afternoon 2-3pm) there taproom/restaurant wasn't overly packed, and that was a good thing as it still allowed us the opportunity to grab a seat at the bar and chat with the bartenders. Honestly, I am not sure where to start here, much like earlier, we went with two flights to try as much as possible, but it was nearly impossible to pick a favorite. However with that being said at the top of my list was "Don't Worry, My Mom Said It's Cool," which was an Imperial Birthday Cake Stout brewed with Astronaut Ice Cream, Cacao Nibs, & Vanilla; it was dessert in a glass (I even...

Starting Over

Starting 2020, I figured it would be an excellent opportunity to start over; my goal late last year was to begin to contribute outside of Twitter, Instagram, & Yelp; however, work and life seemed to get in the way. For those that do not already know or follow me, allow me to introduce myself. I was born and raised in St.Louis, so both baseball and beer are in my blood. Over the last nine years, I have been relatively active in Yelp, which is an online review site. During that time, I had met many people whom I am fortunate enough to call friends. Yelp does encourage community, and if you are looking to share personal experiences about food, beer, cocktails, or anything else, I highly recommend it. About three years ago, I decided to branch out from Yelp to Twitter and Instagram as another platform to share my experiences. Initially, I started to mirror my Yelp experiences, but I quickly grew past that and started to explore my passion for craft beer with occasional food and ran...
