Brewery Review: Bur Oak Brewing (Columbia, MO)

Bur Oak Brewing
Columbia, MO

Visiting craft breweries has recently become a bit of a hobby for me, and I never pass on the chance to sample some new beer. Luckily I have been fortunate enough to travel over the last year and add many new breweries to my list, and I do not expect that to change heading into 2017.

Over the last weekend, I visited Columbia, MO, with several friends, and thanks to Yelp discovered Bur Oak. We arrived on Saturday afternoon, shortly after they had opened the taproom, and were immediately greeted with a warm welcome by the friendly and extremely knowledgeable bartender, Paul. Seriously Paul was an excellent host, and after he discovered that this was our first visit, he gave us a fantastic overview of all their available beers. I would be lying if I said that I knew which beer I wanted, so instead, we started with two flights of 4, which allowed us to sample all their available beers before deciding on one.

While I liked all of the beers, I have to say that I enjoyed the DarkStar, which is a classic German Kolsch ale, with a mild caramel nuttiness delivered in a darker beer that goes down smooth. It wasn't easy to pick just one beer as a favorite; the Boone County Brown was also a top pick too. This Brown Ale had subtle hints of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and a slight caramel backdrop that resulted in great tasting beer.  Although my favorite had to be the Barrel-Aged Clyde's, which was their Clyde's Caramel Cream Ale aged in whiskey barrels. Don't be disappointed if the Barrel-Aged Clyde's isn't available as its non-barrel aged twin, Clyde's Caramel Cream Ale is just as good. Clyde's Carmel Cream Ale delivers a smooth, creamy finish with hints of caramel and vanilla. Don't let my favorites keep you from trying all of their other amazing beers, trust me, you will not be disappointed. While not available year-round, be sure to try Lily, which is an easily drinkable wheat beer with hints of orange, raspberry, and even lavender.

As far as the inside goes, it's cozy; however, you are free to venture into the brewing area. Be sure to check the calendar as they often host events here too. Unfortunately, we were unable to stay later into the evening for that night's mouse races, and yes, it's just like it sounds.

Before we left, we were lucky enough to spend a few minutes talking with the owner, Craig, who was just as impressive as Paul (who was currently giving brewery tours). We talked about beers and learned a bit about the brewery's history and their new brewmaster. Overall this was a great visit, filled with great beer, quality conversation with a fantastic staff who love their beer. If you are in the area, I cannot recommend stopping into Bur Oak enough. I know that I will be back next time I am in town!

2019: Beer in Review

2019 was quite a year, I visited my first brewery outside of the United States during a trip to Mexico, visited the Great American Beer Festival, and visited my milestone 200th brewery. Over the year, I was able to visit 55 new breweries and sampled over 848 unique beers from 287 different breweries. The Great American Beer Festival in Denver, along with several beer festivals in my hometown of St.Louis helped me sample so many different styles of beers. Despite the massive variety, my most common beer style of the year was likely a toss-up between the many IPA varieties and Saisons, however towards the end of the year, I started to venture more into stouts, which is something I usually have stayed away from. St. Louis, MO (Metro Area) St. Louis is my hometown, so I would make an effort to visit every brewery within the region. I think as of this year I have visited most, but there is always something new opening. St.Louis is easily one of the best beer scenes in the country. ...

2nd Shift Cask Festival - 2020

2nd Shift Cask Festival - 2020 January 19th, 2020 2nd Shift Brewing Company Cask Festival With something going on nearly every weekend, it's hard for St. Louis beer-lovers to get bored during the winter months. For example, this past weekend, I attended my second beer festival of 2020, and it is likely one of my favorites.  On Sunday, 2nd Shift Brewing Company held its annual Cask Festival, which brings together a number of their closest friends and some fantastic small-batch beer. For those that are unfamiliar, Cask Festival is a smaller beer festival where 2nd Shift invites their friends to bring small cask just for the festival. During this event, you will likely find variations on existing beers brewed with unique new ingredients or a brand new beer brewed just for the festival; either way, you are in for some exceptional beer choices. One unique thing with this festival is that it allows each attendee a unique opportunity to pour their beer; while sampling...

Brewery Review: Hoof Hearted Brewery & Kitchen (Columbus, OH)

Hoof Hearted Brewery & Kitchen Columbus, OH My second brewery stop in Columbus was an obvious one, how could I resist visiting Hoof Hearted which had recently made their beers available in St.Louis. It was a no brainer to check out their taproom to enjoy some fresh, uniquely brewed beers. After a short Lyft ride from Land-Grant, we arrived at Hoof Hearted, again due to the time (Early afternoon 2-3pm) there taproom/restaurant wasn't overly packed, and that was a good thing as it still allowed us the opportunity to grab a seat at the bar and chat with the bartenders. Honestly, I am not sure where to start here, much like earlier, we went with two flights to try as much as possible, but it was nearly impossible to pick a favorite. However with that being said at the top of my list was "Don't Worry, My Mom Said It's Cool," which was an Imperial Birthday Cake Stout brewed with Astronaut Ice Cream, Cacao Nibs, & Vanilla; it was dessert in a glass (I even...
