Brewery Review: MadTree Brewing (Cincinnati, OH)

MadTree Brewing
Cincinnati, OH

Several customers highly recommended MadTree at Listermann, so we decided to give it a try the following day, and I am happy we did. We arrived shortly after lunch to discover a full house, seriously the inside was packed, but after a few minutes, we were able to get a seat at the bar.

Seating inside consists of tables and communal tables; however, if you are lucky, you can snag one of a handful of seats at the bar. If you do happen to get a seat at the bar, you will be in for a show because the bartenders here stay busy, its constant pours, and they are on the top of their game. The inside is more open-air with large fans circulating air, so I can imagine it getting hot on a super-hot summer day.

Prices were reasonable; however, samplers range in price based on their tier. 4oz samples start at $1.25 but can go up to $3.00. A tasting Flight is available and consists of 4 (4oz) Tasters. To-Go Beer is also available for growlers refill's, anywhere from 32oz up to 64oz. There was a wide variety of beer available during my visit; I counted about 14 beers and managed to sample almost everyone by sharing two flights with a friend. My favorite beer was the Dreamsicle, which was a Kolsch with orange and vanilla. The real surprise beer was the Born to be Mild, which was an English Mild with Earl Grey Tea; it was not what I expected and proved a unique twist on a light, refreshing beer.

In addition to the beer, they also make their non-alcoholic root beer and have some light bites provided by Catch-A-Fire Pizza. We opted for the Ire Boboli (four kinds of cheese stuffed into the dough and served with red sauce) and the Embers (wood-fired doughnuts tossed with cinnamon, sugar, and white icing). Both were delicious and paired well with our beers, and I doubt you could go wrong with ordering a pizza here either.

Overall, MadTree was a great stop on my short but sweet visit to Cincinnati. I will be back next time I am in town.

2019: Beer in Review

2019 was quite a year, I visited my first brewery outside of the United States during a trip to Mexico, visited the Great American Beer Festival, and visited my milestone 200th brewery. Over the year, I was able to visit 55 new breweries and sampled over 848 unique beers from 287 different breweries. The Great American Beer Festival in Denver, along with several beer festivals in my hometown of St.Louis helped me sample so many different styles of beers. Despite the massive variety, my most common beer style of the year was likely a toss-up between the many IPA varieties and Saisons, however towards the end of the year, I started to venture more into stouts, which is something I usually have stayed away from. St. Louis, MO (Metro Area) St. Louis is my hometown, so I would make an effort to visit every brewery within the region. I think as of this year I have visited most, but there is always something new opening. St.Louis is easily one of the best beer scenes in the country. ...

2nd Shift Cask Festival - 2020

2nd Shift Cask Festival - 2020 January 19th, 2020 2nd Shift Brewing Company Cask Festival With something going on nearly every weekend, it's hard for St. Louis beer-lovers to get bored during the winter months. For example, this past weekend, I attended my second beer festival of 2020, and it is likely one of my favorites.  On Sunday, 2nd Shift Brewing Company held its annual Cask Festival, which brings together a number of their closest friends and some fantastic small-batch beer. For those that are unfamiliar, Cask Festival is a smaller beer festival where 2nd Shift invites their friends to bring small cask just for the festival. During this event, you will likely find variations on existing beers brewed with unique new ingredients or a brand new beer brewed just for the festival; either way, you are in for some exceptional beer choices. One unique thing with this festival is that it allows each attendee a unique opportunity to pour their beer; while sampling...

Brewery Review: Hoof Hearted Brewery & Kitchen (Columbus, OH)

Hoof Hearted Brewery & Kitchen Columbus, OH My second brewery stop in Columbus was an obvious one, how could I resist visiting Hoof Hearted which had recently made their beers available in St.Louis. It was a no brainer to check out their taproom to enjoy some fresh, uniquely brewed beers. After a short Lyft ride from Land-Grant, we arrived at Hoof Hearted, again due to the time (Early afternoon 2-3pm) there taproom/restaurant wasn't overly packed, and that was a good thing as it still allowed us the opportunity to grab a seat at the bar and chat with the bartenders. Honestly, I am not sure where to start here, much like earlier, we went with two flights to try as much as possible, but it was nearly impossible to pick a favorite. However with that being said at the top of my list was "Don't Worry, My Mom Said It's Cool," which was an Imperial Birthday Cake Stout brewed with Astronaut Ice Cream, Cacao Nibs, & Vanilla; it was dessert in a glass (I even...
